Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to become a licensed psychotherapist?

I’ve always been drawn to understanding the human experience, especially during times of significant change or challenge. My journey began with a fascination for psychology and spirituality, which led me to pursue advanced degrees and eventually earn my doctorate. The inspiration came from witnessing the resilience of people navigating grief and loss. I wanted to provide them with tools and support to heal and grow while discovering deeper meaning and purpose in their lives.

What motivated you to specialize in grief and loss counseling?

Grief is a universal experience, yet it’s often misunderstood and unsupported in our society. I was deeply influenced by the work of Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross and her groundbreaking studies on death and dying. I saw a need to help people navigate not just the pain of loss but also the transformative opportunities it can bring. Like Dr. Kübler-Ross, I aim to expand the understanding of loss to include both tangible and intangible experiences, helping individuals turn these moments into opportunities for enrichment and growth.

How has your work been influenced by Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross?

Dr. Kübler-Ross’s teachings on the stages of grief have profoundly shaped my approach to counseling. She taught me to view grief not as a linear process but as a deeply personal and unique journey. Her emphasis on compassion, acceptance, and understanding continues to inspire not only my writing but also my coaching and consulting work. I’ve incorporated these lessons into my structured Re-Create model, which serves as a practical tool for navigating loss with a growth mindset.

What inspired you to write your book, UPLIFTING: Inspiring Stories of Loss, Change, and Growth?

I wanted to share real-life stories of individuals who faced profound loss and emerged stronger, wiser, and more connected to their purpose. The book is a testament to the human spirit and its ability to transform adversity into growth. It also provides hope and practical tools for anyone navigating their own journey of loss.

What do you believe is the most significant misconception about grief?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that grief has a timeline or that it’s something you “get over.” Grief isn’t about closure; it’s about learning to live with loss in a way that honors all aspects of your experience—physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental. Grief provides insights into what you value most and creates an opportunity to find meaning again.

How do you help individuals and families cope with profound changes in their lives?

I use a combination of therapeutic approaches tailored to each individual or family’s unique needs. This often includes narrative therapy, mindfulness practices, and strategies to foster resilience. My goal is to help them find their inner strength and create a “new normal” that feels authentic and hopeful.

What role does self-compassion play in the grieving process?

Self-compassion is crucial. Grief can bring up feelings of guilt, anger, or self-doubt. By practicing self-compassion, individuals can acknowledge these emotions without judgment, creating space for healing and growth.

How did you come to collaborate with Elizabeth Hamilton-Guarino on Percolate?Elizabeth and I share a passion for empowering individuals to navigate life’s challenges with hope and resilience. Our collaboration on Percolate: Let Your Best Self Filter Through was a natural extension of our shared mission to inspire positive change. Working together allowed us to blend our expertise in a way that encourages readers to approach life with purpose and possibility.

Can you share a bit about Percolate and what readers can expect from it?Percolate is an uplifting and empowering guide that invites readers to let their best selves filter through. It’s filled with practical strategies, heartfelt stories, and exercises designed to help readers embrace change and create positive transformation in their lives. The book provides a roadmap for finding purpose, cultivating gratitude, and living authentically.

What do you hope readers take away from your books and your work?I hope readers feel empowered to embrace their journeys, even in the face of challenges. My goal is to provide tools that foster self-awareness, build resilience, and create a life filled with meaning, purpose, and connection.

How do you approach helping someone who is unsure about how to move forward when grief overwhelms them?

I help them explore their values and priorities. Together, we identify small, manageable changes that align with what they envision for their lives. Through baby steps, we discover ways to build a meaningful life without what or whom they’ve lost, while honoring their memories and values.

What’s your advice for someone supporting a loved one who is grieving?Be present and listen without judgment. Avoid offering platitudes or trying to “fix” their pain. Instead, provide a safe space for them to share their feelings and let them know they are not alone.

How do you balance the emotional demands of your work as a therapist and author?I prioritize self-care and engage in activities that replenish me. I love singing and participating in musical theater, as well as spending time in nature, walking on the beach, or through the woods. I practice mindfulness, meditation, and connecting with loved ones. It’s essential to model the practices I recommend to my clients.

What has been the most rewarding part of your career so far?

Seeing the transformation in individuals who initially came to me in despair but eventually found strength, purpose, and joy again. Being part of that journey is a privilege and incredibly rewarding.

What’s next for you in your professional journey?

I’m continuing to write, speak, consult, coach, and collaborate on projects that inspire and uplift others. One of my key focuses is the Percolate Peace Project, which builds on the principles of Percolate to promote harmony and understanding in communities. This work allows me to foster conversations around grief, change, and personal growth while exploring innovative ways to reach and support those in need.
